Thanka Paintings

Tibetan art refers to the art of Tibet and other present and former Himalayan kingdoms (Bhutan, Ladakh, Nepal, and Sikkim). Tibetan art is first and foremost a form of sacred art, reflecting the over-riding influence of Tibetan Buddhism on these cultures. The art of Tibet may be studied in terms of influences which have contributed to it over the centuries.

The mandala (tib. Kyilokor) is a geometrical design used for the aid of visualization during meditations. There are a wide variety of mandalas ranging from those that represent the history of time, to those that offer tantric designs for the aid of visualizations. Having a circle as the main theme, the mandala incorporates many shapes and colors each with specific significance for the practitioner's advancement along the path towards nirvana.

This mandala has a vadjra (dorje) as its central theme. The vadjra is depicted in the center, as the symbol of emptiness and power. Surrounding the vadjra are the eight auspicious symbols of Tibetan Buddhism: the wheel of the Dharma, the right turning conch shell, the parasol, the endless knot, the victory sign, the vase, the golden fish, and the lotus blossom. Found within the geometric design are small creatures charged with duty of being Dharmapalas, or Dharma protectors.

This painting of Sakyamuni Buddha has him seated upon a lotus in Dhyanasana meditative position with both legs closely locked and the soles of both feet are visible. His hands are cupping a patra, or alms bowl, in dyanasana mudra with the right hand placed on top of the left,

Sakyamuni Buddha (tib. Shakya Tubpa) is known in the Vadjrayana tradition as the living Buddha. The fourth of five Buddha's to take a rebirth in this world, Sakyamuni Buddha is seen from a Tibetan Buddhist perspective as the teacher of the Buddhist Reality, preaching an abolition of suffering for all sentient beings.

In the Theravada tradition of Buddhism, Sakyamuni is the one and only Buddha. A real prince that experienced the pleasures of life as a member of royal court and the pains of starvation as an ascetic after renouncing all he had before settling upon the middle path to enlightenment that is still followed by monastic of all orders to this day. Here he is called Sakyamuni, meaning from the clan of the Sakyas, however, he has been called by many names such as: Guatama, Siddartha, and the Buddha which means simply, "The Enlightened One". As the historical founder of Buddhism, Sakyamuni is greatly revered throughout the entire Buddhist world as the ideal.
